To the girls who have ever forgotten how beautiful and loved they are…
My hope is that when you doubt your worth, this catchy song can remind you of how amazing you are.
“Loved”: To the person that is reading this, you are loved. There are people on this earth that are blessed to call you their friend. There are people in your life that would be devastated if they lost you.
“Kind”: Yeah, this one’s weird because I don’t know you and you could be the meanest person at your school. However, I choose to agree with Anne Frank that, “in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.” So I encourage you, if you have been hurt but continue to show kindness then KEEP IT UP! But, if you think you can improve in this area then I promise you it’s worth it to do so. As a human race, we must choose love and kindness if we want to thrive.
“Stuck Inside This Brain of Mine”: You are cared for! To me, this lyric means that someone somewhere is thinking of you. When you are absent, it will not go unnoticed. When you have impacted someone’s life, they will remember it.
“Beautiful”: Frankly, as girls, we hear this word thrown around so often that the meaning of it has been lost. Let me remind you, this word isn’t a rescue word you should have said to you just because you are feeling down. The truth is, you are beautiful because you are alive. You are beautiful because you are the only person that can ever be you. You are a living, breathing masterpiece cared for and created by a perfect God that loves you unconditionally.
“Fun to Have Around”: Somebody somewhere appreciates you! Maybe they enjoy your comforting presence, your humor, your laugh, or your craziness. If you’re like my best friend, you are fun to have around simply because nothing is expected. You’re just you.
“Unique”: You are the only person on this earth and the only person in history that can ever be YOU. I say this again because I want to stress how much potential you have. You’re the only one with the ability to impact the world in your own way. Use the talents, resources, and traits that you’ve been given to make a unique difference!
“Complete”: Girl, you don’t need no man! Here’s a secret, there’s no such thing as your better half. You alone have everything you need to be the best version of yourself. You don’t need anyone in order to be the amazing person that you are.
“You Can Stand Upon Your Own Two Feet”: Never doubt yourself. You are strong.
“It’s Ok Not to Be Ok”: There will be times that everything you have going on just becomes too much. You feel alone, hurt, exhausted, and hopeless. That’s ok. That’s reality. Just remember: you are never a burden, your pain is never invalid.
Given the Idea
A couple of months ago, a close family friend of mine commended me on my blog and asked that I write something for her daughter’s demographic: middle school girls. When I thought back on that time in my life, I realized there were certain words that I needed to be told. Certain words I needed to have said to me frequently so that I might not forget my worth. After creating a list of these words during chemistry class, I chose the ones I thought most important to go into a song.
Behind the Song
Of course, I turned to my best friend and asked for her help in writing this song. Since we were at the beach at the time, we used the idea of the ocean, currents, tide, and wind to create the elements of the song. Our overall message is this: YOU ARE WORTH IT. You are loved, kind, thought of, beautiful, fun to have around, unique, complete, and strong. Yet, you are human. You will be hurt, you will be lied to, and you will often question “why?”. But, it’s important that we remember our true worth and spread positivity in our community of girls.
